There are two types of connections to the WinMX network – Primary Connection and Secondary Connection. The WinMX Network requires Primary Connections to perform certain WinMX network functions. A computer operating as a Primary Connection performs searches, sends channel lists, and sends private messages on behalf of Secondary Connected computers, which are usually limited either by bandwidth, availability or blocked/filtered ports. Without fully functioning Primary Connections, the network would cease to be.

Since Secondary Connections rely on properly functioning Primary Connections to perform the functions listed above on their behalf, it is important that your computer is set up correctly if you choose to operate as a Primary Connection.

It is recommended that your computer meet all of the following requirements for a Primary Connection:

1. You can consistently get a channel list of 1300+ channels.

2. The bar at the top of WinMX should show both Primary and Secondary users connecting to you. When setup correctly with Peer Guardian 2 (PG2) running these numbers should stabilize around P=6 and S=9 with default bandwidth allocation settings (7 KB/s OUT and 10 KB/s IN).

3. You should be able to maintain a stable connection to the network for long periods of time.

4. You should have enough bandwidth available to dedicate to maintaining the network. (If your internet service provider has a usage limit or bandwidth throttling in place a Primary Connection is not recommended. In addition if you use other p2p applications in conjunction with WinMX, you may not have enough bandwidth left to perform as a good Primary Connection.)

5. You should have the ability to upload and download successfully.

If your computer does not meet these requirements, please use the Secondary Connection option instead. If you would still prefer to make a Primary Connection, MXPie Team may be able to help you to fix the problems which are causing you to not meet the recommended requirements.
