Nickname: Zardoz

Problem Category: Misc. problem with WinMX

Operating System: Windows XP

ISP: SBC

Type of Internet Connection: Broadband - DSL

Router or Modem/Router Combo: Yes Cisco ?

WinMX Version: 3.54

Installed Patch: MXPie Patch

Type of WinMX Connection: Primary

Installed PG2: Yes

Added WinMX Lists: Yes

Problem: I am having problems with...
WhoIs windows do not show on screen. The active window bar show that they exist, but I cannot see them, even if I move the WinMX window completely out of the way. I found that if I display the Hotlist window & float it and then do a WhoIs on a name in the list, the Who Is window displays, but the other ones still will not. This has only been happening for the last week or so.

At the top of winmx is a colored bar right click in the bar a menu will show pick reset all windows and see if that will fix your problem.

I did notice that command, and when I tried it, the windows moved and re-sized, but this did nothing to the invisible WhoIs windows.

Thanks for trying.

the who-is window should recenter itself also but did you try resizing your monitor to find where it is?

and you did pic it from the icon on the page?

The WhoIs window did not resize anywhere visible on my screen. A while back I was running 2 monitors on the PC, but that card failed, so I switched back to the built in display port, which does not support it. Are you suggesting a resolution change on my display? Which way, higher or lower? Also, I picked the Reset All Windows command from the menu shown when clicking the upper left corner box. What icon are you talking about? Keep in mind, if I float the Hotlist, and do a WhoIs from that window, the WhoIs DOES appear on screen. Shouldn't all the WhoIs windows open in the same location, regardless of how I open them? They are definitely not opening in the background, as I have moved WinMX completely to the side to look there.

I now think it would be wise to uninstall WinMX and reinstall it, because other symptoms have started to appear. When I select the Chat tab, after the warning, no sites come up on the list. Searches don't yield results either. These are new symptoms too. Where is the best location to get the latest version, as I cannot find the version that I installed it from. Also, which patches are recommended these days? Is PeerGuardian still recommended, as I still have it running? Is there a way to preserve my WinMX settings from before the uninstall?

you may be able to remove the dat file from the winmx folder with winmx off when you restart winmx it will remake that file and could possably put all windows back to default locations.

Yes going up to the largest resolution could show you where the who-is window is opening. Then draging it back and putting your resolution back could also fix this.

The settings.dat file did the trick. I renamed it, restarted WinMX, went thru the wizard, and now all of the funnies I've been seeing are gone. Thank you for the suggestion.
